I guess Luis Barragan, the third ranking executive in the HBO boxing department, was not allowed to be all he can be at the prime cable network.

In one of the stranger boxing stories of recent memory, I've learned that Barragan, a lawyer from a San Diego, is giving up his HBO stripes to join the United States Army.

Barragan has so informed numerous boxing personalities of his dramatic career switch in recent weeks.

Barragan is giving up a cushy position in which he worked under Kery Davis. The overall boss of boxing is HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg.

Let's hope this move to the military turns out better for Barragan, age 38, than former world heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe's sudden and disastrous stint in the Marine Corps. Bowe was drummed out of that branch of the service in short order.

Barragan is a smart, personable fellow. I figured he would land on his feet but I never thought they would be wearing combat boots.

Personally, I would only abandon boxing if I could join the French Foreign Legion.
