Dangerous puncher Lucas Matthysse (37-4, 34 KOs) wants to land a big fight in the fall.
Matthysse is scheduled to return to the ring on May 6 in Las Vegas, when he faces against Emanuel Taylor at the T-Mobile Arena. After years of competing as a junior welterweight, Matthysse is heading up to the welterweight division.
Matthysse vs. Taylor will be part of the HBO Pay-Per-View undercard to the all-Mexican battle between Canelo Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
Matthysse has not been in the ring since getting knocked out in ten rounds by Postol in October 2015 in California. They were fighting for the vacant super lightweight crown of the World Boxing Council.
The Argentinean is now training in Indio, California with new trainer Joel Diaz, who is best known for grooming nearly the the entire career of two-division champion Timonthy Bradley.
"I'm very happy. We were working with my family for months to get back to fighting again. Ten years have passed since my debut in the United States and there were many very important fights. I live through a lot of things and I am happy to return. I had good and bad things happen, but I'm fine because I'm back and because I'm with my family. I already changed my weight division and I know I'm going to have to secure my position again, this time at welterweight. I feel like changing is going to be for the better," Matthysse said.
If he defeats Taylor, he wants to eventually get a crack at WBC, WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman or a rematch with Danny Garcia, who won a twelve round decision over Matthysse in 2013.
If Matthysse had his way, he would fight Garcia next and then collide with Thurman at the end of the year.
"I am more in control, I have a bigger career than I did ten years ago, I have the same hunger to win, I am very confident and I prepared for this. I will finally get back in the ring, against Emmanuel Taylor on May 6 - and then hopefully Danny Garcia gives me the rematch. I want to fight for a world title, against Keith Thurman or whoever. I know I have to win to get my position [in the sport] again. We are already in the race to face these new challenges."
