Former WBC interim-junior welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse will return to the ring in the United States on a date in April or May 2017, according to the boxer's agent Mario Arano.
Arano confirmed that he recently held a meeting in Los Angeles with Matthysse's promoter, Oscar de la Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions. They discussed his future for the coming year.
Matthysse will have a whole new outlook when he comes back. He plans to move up in weight, to 147-pounds, with his motivation set to capture a welterweight world title.
Matthysse resumed training last month in his home province in Argentina. He is forming a new team which is going to be led by veteran trainer Joel Diaz of California.
In his last ring appearance, on October 3, 2015, Matthysse was knocked out in ten rounds by then unbeaten Ukrainian Viktor Postol in California. They were fighting for the vacant WBC junior welterweight world title.
Prior to the loss to Postol, Matthysse had built up a three fight winning streak since suffering a twelve round decision loss to Danny Garcia in September of 2013. He knocked out John Molina in a Fight of The Year war in April of 2014, then blew past Roberto Ortiz in September of the same year, and then came back in April of 2015 with another Fight of The Year candidate in beating Ruslan Provodnikov with a close twelve round majority decision.
Matthysse, 34 years old, has a record of 37 victories, 34 of them by knockout, and four defeats.
