Former WBC interim-junior welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (37-4, 34KOs) of Argentina could return to the ring as early as September, according to Golden Boy Promotions.
As previously reported on BoxingScene.com, Matthysse is planning to be in Las Vegas this week to sit down with Golden Boy and discuss his future in the sport.
Golden Boy is staging a big pay-per-view card on Saturday night, with Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez defending his WBC middleweight title against Amir Khan at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Matthysse was invited to the card as a guest.
Matthysse has not fought since last October when he was knocked out by Viktor Postol in a showdown for the vacant WBC championship. Matthysse suffered an eye injury the contest after taking a good shot and went down for the full count.
And although he was initially scheduled to fight on the Canelo-Khan undercard against Mauricio Herrera, in the end he declined the offer. This week he will listen to offers after meetings with his manager Mario Arano and Golden Boy Promotions.
"They are coming this week, Mario and Lucas. We're going to talk about what they want, the important thing is that he's physically we. He was complaining about his eye, because he was not one hundred percent [to fight in May] - but we expect him to fight in September. Matthysse loves to be on HBO and they are delighted with him. If he can not [fight in September], then he can come back in October or November," said Eric Gomez, vice president of Golden Boy Promotions, to ESPN Deportes.
