Among fans and journalists in Argentina, there is a mystery brewing over top junior welterweight contender Lucas Matthysse (37-4, 34KOs).
According to several overseas journalists, Matthysse posted a few messages Tuesday night on his personal social media account where he stated that he was tired of boxing and practically hinted at retirement. He erased the messages, but not before numerous fans and reporters picked it up.
Then on Wednesday, it was announced by Golden Boy Promotions that Matthysse was still suffering from an eye injury and he was unable to move forward with a planned return on the upcoming Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez-Amir Khan HBO Pay-Per-View undercard on May 7th in Las Vegas.
Matthysse suffered the eye injury last October when he was knocked out by Viktor Postol in California. That was Matthysse second loss in his last five fights.
Matthysse had interviews that followed weeks after the contest with Postol and stated that his eye was 100% and there was no issue.
Some journalists in Argentina tried to clear up the controversy by contacting his manager Mario Arano, who did not respond to reporters who were pressing for answers on what the story might be.
Matthysse's friend and countryman, former world champion Marcos Maidana, has also taken an extended break from the sport. He hasn't fought since a September 2014 decision loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr.
