NEWLY crowned WBC International super flyweight champion Sylvester Lopez will try to gain experience by taking on a veteran journeyman in a non-title fight at the D'Flash Ballroom of Elorde Sports Center in Sucat, Paranaque City, Philippines on Saturday night.
Sungahid replaces Chinese fighter Jiang Tao (6-7-1, 1 KO), the supposed opponent for Lopez on the original date of May 30. The card was later postponed to the date of June 27.
The slated 10-round contest at the 118 pounds limit will serve as the main event of the planned 11-bout card being put together by promoter Gabriel “Bebot” Elorde Jr.
Lopez (9-2-1, 6 KOs) captured the vacant title with an impressive 6th round stoppage win against previously unbeaten South Korean champion Jong-Nam Park last April at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
Elorde revealed that he plans to stage Lopez’s first title defense some time in September against a Mexican or Japanese challenger.
But Sungahid aims to make his own move by looking for an upset against the young prospect, who dropped a single spot to No. 28 in the latest world by the WBC last month. A victory by Sungahid will open his chance to barge into the WBC world rankings.
Sungahid scored a 9th round knockout win in his latest fight in March at Cordillera Career Development College Gym in Buyagan, La Trinidad, Benguet where he demolished Alvin Tam.
