While IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin prepares for his upcoming mandatory contest against Danny Jacobs at the Madison Square Garden on March 18th, there is speculation that a bout against WBO middleweight belt-holder, Billy Joe Saunders, could be taking place in the summer.
But when Tom Loeffler, who is the managing director of K2 Promotion was asked about these rumors, he told BoxingScene.com on Thursday afternoon:
"No, no truth to that. Gennady is focused on March 18th. If he wins that fight naturally we'd like to make the 'Canelo' (Saul Alvarez) fight but my job is to look forward and see what's available out there but everyone is focused on Danny Jacobs right now, because it's by far his most dangerous opponent of his career."
The hope is that Golovkin will face former WBC middleweight titlist, Alvarez, in September. Alvarez is scheduled to face Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on May 6th at a catch-weight of 164.5-pounds. So before this match-up can be made, a lot still has to take place inside the ring.
"'Canelo' still has his fight in May, Gennady's goal has always been to unify the middleweight division. The 'Canelo' fight would clearly be the biggest in the sport of boxing. So we'll have to see how it goes in March, we'll have to see how it goes in May to see what the best position is for Gennady at that point is,' 'stated Loeffler, who sees light at the end of the tunnel for Golovkin and his quest for marquee fights.
"The good thing is if he's successful in March, I think it will finally open up all the doors for the big fights that he's been seeking out for the last five years."
