New York - Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions has been instrumental in the superstar rise of IBO, WBC, WBA, IBF middleweight king Gennady Golovkin (36-0, 33 KO’s).
Since landing in the United States in September of 2011, Golovkin has gone from headlining small ballrooms in the United States to selling out arenas in New York, Los Angeles, and in the United Kingdom.
On March 18, Golovkin brings his “Big Drama Show” back to New York when he takes on Brooklyn native Danny Jacobs (32-1, 29 KO’s) inside the big room at Madison Square Garden. Jacobs, who is advised by power manager Al Haymon, has long fought most of his career on Showtime but for this fight the Brooklyn native will be headlining on HBO pay-per-view. To bring another Haymon client to HBO took hard work, according to Loeffler.
“It was a lot of work to put it together but it was never a question whether each guy wanted the fight,” Loeffler told BoxingScene.com. “Both guys wanted to prove that they were the best and the winner really comes out the best in the division and cements their status as a superstar. Once we announced this fight, reaction from fans and media have been tremendous.”
A lot has been made over the last couple of months regarding insurance requirements in New York. The commission has raised the minimums in the coverage so much that the club shows in New York area are basically dead. There has only been one boxing event in New York since September of 2016.
Loeffler thinks that there will be no issue in obtaining the required insurance to proceed with the card.
“I’ve been in direct contact with the commission, just keeping an eye on how the policies are working out and they have assure me that there is coverage in place by March. There [was] a big show [last] Saturday at Barclays and [Lou Dibella had] insurance in place for that show. By March, we’ll have everything set by then.”
