On Saturday evening young Welsh prospect Liam Williams scored a career best win, forcing Ronnie Heffron’s corner to pull their man out at the end of the sixth round.
 
Williams 22, who trains under the auspicious eye of Gary Lockett made a positive start and got the better of the early action only for a clash of heads in the second round causing a cut to Heffron’s right eye.
 
Williams who improved to 10-0-1, with 5 knockouts was happy with his evening work.
 
“Yeah I thought it went really well,” Williams told BoxingScene.com shortly after his win. “I was putting the pressure on him a little bit but I was trying to take my time in the rounds cause this was my first 10-rounder.
 
“I was very confident I could keep up the pace no problem, could have even picked it up but I wanted to get the rounds in actually but the stoppage came and I’m very happy.”
 
His trainer Lockett was also happy with his fighters work though believes there to be much more to come from the youngster.
 
“Yeah pretty happy, he can do a lot better, he knows that. I’m not saying it was a bad performance because it wasn’t,” said Lockett. “Some of the counters and combinations were on point but he’s a lot better than that, a lot sharper than that. But it’s only ring time that’s going to get him to where we need to be.”
 
Williams who would agree that this was his best win as a pro, admitted to having his concerns when he realised Heffron was cut from the clash of heads.
 
“Yes I was a little worried because I’ve had it done before against Tyan Booth and it’s not very nice.” he said “Obviously you train weeks and weeks, I’ve been in the gym for 11-weeks, to me basically that would have been a waste of time, I might as well of just gone out on the p!ss for 11-weeks it would have been a total waste of time.”
 
Since turning pro in November 2011 Williams has improved but says over the past year he’s really come on.
 
“To be honest there’s no limit to how I’ve progressed,” he said “Training with the likes of Gary (Lockett), just being around Gavin (Rees), Enzo (Maccarinelli), the other boys in the gym I’m learning all the time.”
 
Fighter and trainer seem on the same page as to what the future holds.
 
“Stepping up slowly, I need a couple more fights possibly before fighting the likes of Liam Smith, Brian Rose,” said Williams “I’m 100 percent confident I will be there. More ring time, more experience I’ll gain. Basically I’m still a kid, keep learning all the time.”
 
Words Lockett would echo. “We’ve got the up most respect for the likes of Liam Smith and Brian Rose but at the moment they’re 2/3 fights away but I think 2/3 fights will bring him on and I think he’s gonna be there.”
 
Williams will now have some time off, he goes on holiday next Sunday for a week. During the build up to this fight Williams had some hand trouble and has been told by the doctors to not punch anything for 6 to 8 weeks.

When he returns the future would appear bright.
