British super welterweight Liam Williams has parted ways with trainer Gary Lockett.

Williams, 26, from Church Village, Wales will now team up with Dominic Ingle in Sheffield. Ingle also trains the likes of WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders and Kell Brook.

The former British champion (17-2-1, 12 KOs) made his announcement via his Instagram account today.

"After much thought over several months, I have made the difficult decision to part company with my trainer Gary Lockett," he began.

"After spending many years and enjoyed some great times and successes with Gary, I felt that I needed to change things within my team and freshen things up. This initially began with joining MTK Global earlier this year, and now the final part of the transition is appointing my new trainer, Dominic Ingle."

Williams revealed that he has spent the last few weeks working with some of the top trainers that Britain has to offer, but opted for Ingle saying that his decision to join the son of the late, legendary Brendan Ingle, was an "easy one in the end".

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank Gary from the bottom of my heart for everything he has done for me over the years, and I wish him well in the future." Williams added.

"As for now, I’m back in the gym with a renewed vigour for working hard with my new training team, and will be looking to announce my next fight date soon."

Wiliams had seemed set to face Asinia Byfield for the vacant British title at 154lbs but withdrew from the bout, likely down to him changing coaches, which now sees Byfield go up against Ted Cheeseman later in the year.

The rest of 2018 and the first half 2019 will be critical for Williams, as he looks to get back up the 154lb divisional ladder after losing two fights back-to-back against rival Liam Smith last year. The Welshman got back in the swing of things in April stopping Darryl Sharp in the third round of their eight-round fight.
