BoxingScene understands that Liam Smith and Oklahoma's Carson Jones are in talks for a spring meeting. Jones, 37-10-3 (27), has been to the U.K. four times: twice losing out to Kell Brook (L MD 12 and TKO 8), drawing with Dean Byrne over eight and handing Brian Rose a single stanza stoppage defeat in February. The 28-year-old could be eyeing another trip to Britain to face the highly-rated Liverpudlian, who is one of the four fighting Smith brothers.
Smith moved to 19-0-1 (9) when stopping Robert Talarek in eight earlier this month; he wants to press his championship claims against a world-rated foe and has spoken about his desire to take on the likes of Jones and other contenders.
The 26-year-old currently holds the WBA Continental and British light-middleweight belts. Joe Gallagher, his trainer, has compared his neat, compact style to that of Miguel Cotto. Team Smith are chomping at the bit for a shot at one of the world titles, a meeting with and win over Jones would bring him a step closer to his dream.
