Liam Smith (21-0-1, 11KOs) netted the WBO light-middleweight title on Saturday night courtesy of a seventh-round KO win over John Thompson on a Frank Warren-promoted bill at the Manchester Arena.
Now that the dust has settled, the 27-year-old has declared a desire to fight in the U.S. at some point as well as stating that he is looking forward to defending his title here in the U.K.
Smith told the Liverpool Echo that he is still coming to terms with the fact that he holds a world title; he is the first of the four fighting Smith brothers to win world honours and is relishing the acclaim that is coming his way.
“I don't really care where I defend my title but I have fulfilled one dream and now another dream is to win a world title in America,” stated Smith. “I would love to defend it back home too; I'm defending a world title wherever and that's just amazing. I can't describe how I feel right now, it just hasn't sunk in, but I can tell how much it means to everyone around me.”
Sugar Shane Mosley mooted a fight between the two when taking to Twitter pn Monday. Smith had already told The Echo that he would consider a fight with the former world champion.
“I'd be a liar if I said I never looked past Thompson but to be honest, I did,” he revealed. “I saw Shane Mosley calling out Cornelius Bundrage last week and he doesn't even have a world title. I have the world title now, so Shane Mosley should be calling me out.
“These are massive fights and massive names. People chase world titles and I have one so they've got to chase me now. I'm excited to see what names I get offered now.”
