Undefeated middleweight boxer Liam Desmond 3-0-0 is looking to make it four wins in four at the Civic Hall in Grays, Essex on March 14th on a Carl Greaves Promotions show.
The Essex boxer will fight in a four round contest at middleweight with the opponent yet to be confirmed.
The 21-year-old raced to three straight wins during 2014 scalping Liam Griffiths 3-49(2)-1 on his debut in March and taking all four rounds on the scorecards in the process at the same setting for all of his pro contests to date – Grays Civic Hall.
Four months later in July, Desmond took on and beat tough journeyman Dee Mitchell 10(2)-73(2)-2 on points over four rounds.
His latest win came in the form of Kieron Gray 7(1)-38(5)-1 in November as he just edged a points decision at 39-38. The ‘Slammer’ provided tough opposition for Desmond and has just ended a 12 fight losing run by becoming the first to defeat International Masters light-middleweight champion Wayne Alwan-Arab 16(1)-1-0.
The young prospect recently split with his trainer to join Kevin Lilley who also trains unbeaten light-heavyweight boxer Darrel Church, “Got a good team with Kev, there’s a few pros as well as a few Queensbury Boxing League boxers in there. I’ve sort of known Kev for a while now, since about five years or maybe longer than that. My previous trainer moved away so I spoke to Kev and tried it out for a couple of weeks and then decided to go for it,” said Desmond.
He continued, “Obviously, it’s my first camp with new trainer Kev Lilley, we’ve been doing a lot of defensive work and I’m strengthening up now.
“Kev is getting me to settle my feet down, pick my shots better and not to rush, to take my time with punches and not bounce around like an amateur.
“I’ve been an amateur since 11-years-old so it took time to change to the pros and I’m still learning new things now, it’s not so pit-a-pat, need to make the punches count more now.
“This training camp has just started so I haven’t sparred yet but Vinz Kuech and Darrel Church will be good sparring at different weights for me.”
Liam began boxing aged eight for Newham ABC in Stratford and then went on to box for West Ham ABC under the guidance of legendary boxing coach Mickey May.
“I started off at Newham and then went to West Ham – it was a great club. I was trained by Mickey May and Micky Driscoll as a junior and then Brian O’Shaughnessy as a senior.
“I managed to get to the Junior ABA National finals and NABC final, I won a Silver and a Gold in the Haringey Box Cup, a Silver in the Swedish Box Cup and was London champion four times.”
March 14th will mark the anniversary of Liam’s debut completing his first year as a professional making it a special occasion for the ambitious youngster, “I’ve only got a small circle of friends so work mates, family and close friends will be there. It’s always building but this fight there’s more interest now after my three straight wins, they’ve heard of my name so hopefully it’ll just keep increasing.
“It means the world to me, I appreciate them all coming as it’s not the cheapest night out so I really do appreciate the support.”
The rest of the action on the night features unbeaten southpaw Johnny Coyle 8(2)-0-0 in an eight round welterweight contest.
Another unbeaten southpaw Vinzenz Kuech 5(1)-0-0 also enters in to an eight round contest at welterweight.
Teammate Darrel Church 2-0-0 is looking to extend his unbeaten run to three in three after collecting two points wins since joining the paid ranks in July this year against opponents Curtis Gargano 0-1-1 and debutant Haider Sadiq four months later in November.
Brett Saggs looks forward to a busy campaign with this scheduled four round welterweight fight his second of the year as he is booked to fight at the Camden Centre on February 7th on a Helraiser promotions show. The 23-year-old will be looking to come out of this fight with his fifth straight win.
Trainer-come-boxer Frank Greaves 0-1-0 will be seeking his first win after losing on his debut to former Southern Area welterweight champion Gavin Tait 14(4)-10(1)-0 in November last year.
Debutant light-heavyweight boxer, Joe Jackson Brown from Banbury, Oxfordshire is a product of the hugely successful Queensbury Boxing League run by former English welterweight champion, Ross Minter. The 22-year-old, also coached by Kevin Lilly, embarks upon his professional debut over four rounds against an opponent yet to be named.
Tickets to the show are priced at £35 for standard and £50 for ringside and available from Team Desmond on 07518 183875
