Sheffield's Liam Cameron (20-5, 8 early) has said that he is willing to attempt to derail the momentum and hype that has been built around Oldham-based big hitter Mark Heffron (18-0, 14 KOs) should they meet in a final eliminator for the British middleweight title currently held by Tommy Langford, who meets Jack Arnfield at Blackpool's Winter Gardens on February 10 in the first defence of the title he won by outpointing Sam Sheedy at Cardiff's Motorpoint Arena in November.
The BBBoC made the match-up in their December circular, stating that: ‘The Stewards decided to put out the above final eliminator contest to purse bids to be submitted in accordance with the Terms and Conditions attached to the Board’s Head Office by 12:00noon on Wednesday, 10th January 2018, the contest to take place by the end of April 2018.’
When speaking to Bob Westerdale of the Sheffield Telegraph, the 27-year-old admitted that he may opt against defending his Commonwealth title in favour of the mandated bout against Heffron, who signed a deal with Frank Warren and BoxNation last year. “I'd fight Heffron, no problem, there,” he said. “But I will wait and see what Dennis comes up with.”
Cameron picked up the Commonwealth belt with a stirring win over Sam Sheedy at the Ponds Forge Arena, Sheffield last time out (W RSF 8) and hopes to lead Hobson’s foray into free-to-air boxing over the coming years.
The promoter is working with FreeSports to put on televised shows and the Cameron-Sheedy clash was well-received by British boxing fans. Cameron is pencilled in to face Elliot Matthews in a first defence in February, but is still receptive to a fight with Heffron.
Heffron has been tabbed for big things and many believe that he is now fully focussed under Ricky Hatton after a stop-start beginning to his pro career. With a TV and promotional deal also in place, the 26-year-old puncher will hope to secure his first major title during 2018 in order to progress up the British rankings and gain wider recognition.
