On July 23rd Lenny Zappavina improved his record to 35-2 with an impressive 6th round knockout of IK Yang at the MGM Grans Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. The fight took place on the Terence Crawford-Viktor Postol undercard.
The fight was probably scheduled as an IBF super lightweight elimination bout. Those plans were scrapped when it became evidence early on during fight week that Yang would not be able to make weight which infuriated Zappavigna.
"I was very upset man. I was ready to make 140. I was there almost at 140 and they called me and said we need to bump it up to 143 because he was having weight problems. I wasn't worried about the weight - but losing the opportunity with the IBF - because now it wasn't an eliminator but I am sure something good will come out of this," said Zappavigna.
Unbeaten Eduard Troyanovsky is the current IBF super lightweight champion and if the bout had been an eliminator, Zuppavigna would have become his mandatory challenger.
Lenny Z, who is from Australia, said that he is still very interested in facing him or any of the other champions in the division.
"I will take any world champion at 140 to be honest but if if I can get Troyanovsky with the IBF, or the WBA is another great fight with Ricky Burns, whatever we can get. I am training in America out of Wildcard now. I have a good team behind me and 37 fights so it's time to step up and get some real fights," Zappavigna told BoxingScene.com.
