Former world heavyweight king Lennox Lewis believes Moses Itauma is the future of the division, but should wait for Oleksandr Usyk to move on before claiming the throne.
Lewis, who this week turned 60, is one of the great big men and believes Itauma, still only 20, should not be rushed into a Usyk fight.
Itauma, 13-0 (11 KOs), is rated No. 1 by the WBO and the WBA following his recent first-round blitz of Dillian Whyte.
“It’s way too soon,” Lewis told Sky Sports. “It’s better to wait until he retires. He [Usyk]’s not going to stay around too long, and then take your shot. There’s no use doing it now. Right now you’re learning. You’re learning everything and you have to wait for the right time. You can never be rushed. If you’re rushed, you’re going to do a bad result for your career, so it’s better to take your time and take it when it’s ready, when you’re ready.”
Lewis was in Florida learning to scuba dive, and said he had wanted to do a parachute jump by 60, but was told he was too heavy.
