Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn is hoping to schedule a fall showdown between WBA featherweight champion Leigh Wood and former two-time beltholder Josh Warrington.

Hearn would like to stage the fight at the City Ground, with the month of September being the target.

Last month in Manchester, Wood recovered from a knockout loss to score a dominating decision in his rematch with Mauricio Lara to recapture the WBA world title.

Warrington, who was hoping to fight the winner, has been eager to get in the ring with Wood. He's been out of the ring since losing a twelve round decision to Luis Alberto Lopez back in December of last year.

For his part, the champion is hoping that his next defense can be held at City Ground.

"I'll dig my heels in to get it," Wood told BBC Radio Nottingham back in May."I'll be 35 by the next time I box and I want that City Ground fight - it's my dream."

Hearn is currently attempting to make Wood's dream a reality.

“We had a call today from Nottingham Forest and I spoke to Leigh this morning,” Hearn told Matchroom Boxing. “We want to make it happen.

“There seems to be a keenness from the club to help us and help Leigh Wood make history in Nottingham with that fight. There’s a lot of moving parts but we’re working towards September at the City Ground, and we’d love to make it happen.

“We want the Josh Warrington fight, that’s a huge fight for British boxing, there is the mandatory as well which we have to address. But if we have it our way, it will be the City Ground against Josh Warrington in September.”
