It has been reported that former heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson died earlier today at his home in New Paltz, N.Y. at the age of 71. Patterson is survived by his second wife and four children. Patterson, at age 37, retired from boxing in 1972.
Patterson had a fantastic hall of fame career, he won the the New York Golden Gloves tournament, a gold medal as a middleweight in the 1952 Olympics, stopped Archie Moore in 1956 to become the youngest heavyweight champion in history at age 21, became the first two-time heavyweight champion and served as the New York State athletic commissioner.
The final professional tally for Patterson was 55-8-1, with 40 wins by knockout.
Patterson was suffering from Alzheimer's disease and prostate cancer. Funeral arrangements are unknown at the moment.
