Despite the announcement of a plan to have Sergey Kovalev and Andre Ward meet in the second half of 2016, Main Events CEO Kathy Duva says she is still actively trying to pursue a Kovalev bout against Adonis Stevenson for the summer.
''I'm going to meet with [Stevenon's promoter] Yvon Michel next week and I'm trying very hard to make the fight for June and we have basically gotten to the point, Yvon and I, we've been able to agree on all the terms and Yvon goes back to Stevenson's manager and the goal posts keep moving," she said to BoxingScene.com in Las Vegas.
Stevenson is represented by Al Haymon.
"So we're going to try very, very hard to get it done because frankly we're going to let them know if he doesn't fight Sergey in June, this whole ship may have sailed for him, permanently, and I do believe Stevenson wants the fight," added Duva, who says that there is a very real possibility that 'the Krusher's 2016 could include both Stevenson and Ward.
"Let's put it this way," said Duva, "it's Sergey's and my Christmas wish list. It can't happen if you don't try and I think there's no reason for me to stop trying. Again, Yvon and I can agree on every single term, everything I'm told Al Haymon wanted has been satisfied. If he keeps moving the goal-posts it's up to Adonis Stevenson to stand up to him and tell him that he wants the fight.
"If he doesn't, that's on Adonis Stevenson and his legacy will be he never took the fight everyone wanted to see. If he's satisfied with that, he gets another car or whatever it takes to make him happy, God bless him. But I'm not going to give up."
