WBA/WBO/IBF light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (27-0-1 24 KOs) is days away from facing his IBF mandatory challenger Nadjib Mohammedi (37-3). The HBO televised fight takes place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The hard hitting Russian is a crowd favorite who has been compared with fellow heavy hitter Gennady "Triple G" Golovkin. Triple G has recently adopted the slogan "Mexican Style" and has become a huge draw in Southern California.
BoxingScene.com and BoxeoMundial.com recently caught up with the Russian and asked him if he believes he can have the same crossover appeal of Golovkin.
"I respect all fans. As for Gennady's fans and my fans - I want to fight here (in Las Vegas). It makes me happy to fight on the west coast. I think even if we fought on the same day in different places, even on different coasts, there would be a lot of fans for both of us."
"I try to be Mexican style, you know. I try to use the Mexican style. I push and work on it like the Mexicans. I spar with Mexicans. I am not running. I just want to fight and how does it look? I don't know. You decide (if it is Mexican style)," Kovalev said with a grin.
