BoxingScene.com was on hand for a recent media roundtable with WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev in Atlantic City, NJ. The 30-year-old Kovalev spoke on a variety of topics including a potential showdown with WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson. Kovalev is very interested in the fight but Stevenson feels that there are bigger fights out there that can be made.
"I think he understands that I am dangerous in the ring. It is dangerous for me too but I know what I need to do in the ring. That is why he forgot my name (when he said he was interested in facing Bernard Hopkins or Carl Froch after his last fight)," Kovalev stated.
Stevenson is on a short list of candidates for 2013's Fighter of the Year honors. Like Stevenson, Kovalev has also compiled a 4-0 record this year. I asked the Russian if he feels his record stacks up with Stevenson.
"I beat guys like Gabriel Campillo who was a former champion. I viewed him as still a champion. Then I beat Cleverly to become champion. He was undefeated. He defended his belt five times. Stevenson beat Chad Dawson but Dawson wasn't in good shape. He wasn't recovered from getting knocked out by Andre Ward," Kovalev told BoxingScene.com.
