There were no issues at the scales, as all fighters made weight for Friday’s Telemundo-televised show in Mexico City (Friday, 11:35pm ET). Headlining the card—the second of the four-week summer season of “Boxeo Telemundo”—Romulo Koasicha faces Guillermo Avila in a scheduled 12-round regional featherweight title fight.
Both fighters weighed in right at the 126 lb. mark.
Koasicha (24-4, 14KOs) comes in riding a three-fight win streak following a 12-round loss to Lee Selby last May. Selby has since claimed a featherweight belt, scoring a minor upset over Evgeny Gradovich this past May in England.
Friday’s bout will mark Koasicha’s third of 2015, which includes an eight-round decision win over Edgar Monarrez this past April.
Avila (15-3, 12KOs) has also won three straight—all by knockout—although his time spent on the Telemundo circuit has been better known for his losses. The Tijuana-based slugger went all in for his 12-round war with former 122 lb. titlist Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., coming up just short in a debatable decision.
A rematch was targeted to kick off the 2014 spring season premiere of Boxer Telemundo, only for Vazquez Jr. to bail and instead take a different career path. Avila was instead matched with Jonathan Oquendo, dropping a 12-round decision last March, followed by an 8th round stoppage loss to Andrey Klimov last August.
Like Koasicha, Avila fights for the third time in 2015. His most recent appearance came in April, scoring a 6th round stoppage of Francisco Marquez.
In the co-feature, bantamweight hopeful Martin Casillas faces Roberto Pucheta in an eight-round bout. Both fighters weighed in at 120 lbs.
