LOS ANGELES, CALIF - On Tuesday, December 6th, a production meeting took place in Beverly Hills, California to figure out the future of boxing's best received program Knockout. The program showcases the world’s best trainers and hungry up and coming prospects. With the concept of becoming a breeding ground for future stars in the sport, Knockout has morphed into what many believe will change the landscape of boxing television and become a stepping stone for those trying to cement a legacy in the sweet science.
When Knockout returns for it's third season in late April 2017, it will be a league which will not only focus on fighters from North America, but will have international talent on display as well .
Knockout is focused not only on making champions but more importantly on making stars that will bring boxing back to the forefront of sports. In boxing, it takes years to build a star but when you finally reach superstar status, the financial payout is like no other when it comes to combat sports.
This has been proven with the likes of Oscar De La Hoya, Mike Tyson, Manny Pacquiao and most recently Floyd Mayweather Jr, who before his retirement was the world’s highest paid athlete in 2014 and 2015. Now with the retirement of Mayweather Jr., the answer to who will take over the throne and be boxing's next big name remains to be seen.
At the head of the project is Executive Producer Steven Marcano who brought the show to life from the ground up.
Marcano commented, “Season one was incredible. (Floyd) Mayweather Sr. and (Ruben) Guerrero were what the show was about and they are now super talented people who have crossed into mainstream stardom.
"But now Knockout is much more than a television show. We plan to following in the steps of UFC and the WWE with films, television, retail and endorsements. I believe boxers deserve this. There are so many greats that give so much to the sport but when it's all said and done, not many are recognized by mainstream America. So I see not a promotional or a production company but I see a full service company. So many have done this for sports and entertainment but not one of the major promoters in the sport have built anything like you will see with Knockout 2017."
By having some of the biggest names in previous seasons like “Sugar” Shane Mosely and Roy Jones Jr, while working off a blueprint similar to that of the UFC and WWE, season 3 of Knockout is poised to become the best vehicle for up and coming boxing stars.
"It has been written that Knockout is the American idol of boxing but Knockout is much more than just a show. It is a major production and ad agency which will focus on television and movies. With some of Hollywood’s strongest agents working alongside a creative production team, opportunities for fighters won’t only come in the ring but will allow them to have the chance at other parts of entertainment as well. Knockout production will take begin in late January, 2017," said Marcano.
