According to many, former heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs has been going overboard in his approach to secure a fight with WBO/IBO/WBA/IBF unified champion Wladimir Klitschko.
Wherever Klitschko goes, Briggs goes. Over the last year, Briggs has confronted Klitschko at media events in the United States and Germany. He also had a confrontation with Klitschko in a Florida restaurant, and even rented a boat to approach the champion while he was on a paddleboard at a lake.
Trainer Johnathon Banks, who works with Klitschko, is not impressed with Briggs' antics or his recent string of knockouts.
If he wants a shot at the heavyweight title, Banks wants him to do it the old fashioned way - by working his way up the ladder with victories over fighters who are ranked in the top ten.
"I love the sport of boxing, I love it. I was taught a different level boxing by the late legend, Emanuel Steward. The way Shannon is going about this, it doesn’t have anything to do with boxing," Banks told On The Ropes Boxing Radio .
"Guys talks their talk, that’s a part of boxing to me but when you put the gloves on, you’re supposed to show everybody why you’re talking like this and that hasn’t happened at all. I really believe Shannon can fight really well, I think Shannon is a good fighter, but what has he done lately? He hasn’t fought anybody. Can you really fight for the world championship without beating one top ten contender in ten years?"
