Johnathon Banks, heavyweight contender and trainer for unified champion Wladimir Klitschko, says two-division king David Haye (26-2, 24KOs) needs to earn his title shot like everyone else in the division. Haye fought and lost to Wladimir in 2011. He retired afterwards, but came back last year and knocked out Dereck Chisora. He once again appeared to be on the verge of retirement, and then signed a deal with promoter Eddie Hearn for at least four more fights.
"For him to get a fight with [a Klitschko], he would have to be like any other opponent. He would have to beat some top contenders and become a mandatory. Why do people just wake one morning and think they can just get [a Klitschko], like David Haye. He's been off for two years, he hasn't fought nobody. I don't get it. It doesn't make any sense to me," Banks said.
Haye will return on June 29th against Manuel Charr at the Manchester Arena.
