As previously reported, K2 Promotions and Hennessy Sports reached an agreement today, prior to the scheduled World Boxing Association purse bid, for the highly anticipated heavyweight fight between champion Wladimir Klitschko and mandatory challenger Tyson Fury. The fight will be held in Dusseldorf, Germany on Saturday, October 24.
But not everyone was happy with the outcome. Russian promoter Vladimir Hryunov (who appeared on behalf of UK promoter Frank Warren) plans to protest the agreement, claiming the purse bid was intentionally delayed - against the rules of the WBA - when his presence (and that of Matchroom Sports) - was noticed by K2 Promotions.
Hryunov, who came ready with a purse bid of $18 million dollars, was confident he was going to outbid all of the parties and place the fight in the UK and on BoxNation. Matchroom Sports was rumored to be bidding $9 million and looking to place the fight on Sky Sports. Hennessy says the TV broadcaster in the UK has yet to be announced. HBO will carry in the United States.
