The Halifax Herald Limited reports that heavyweight contender Kirk Johnson (36-2-1, 26KOs) and promoter Dino Duva are close to agreeing upon a contract release that would allow Johnson, 35, to find a new promoter and move forward with his career.

Johnson has been inactive since suffering knee injury in his March 2006 bout with Javier Mora. He claims that Duva has been unable to secure him a fight since last December. Johnson’s lawyer, Chicago’s John Hornewer, said that Johnson's camp has been pushing Duva to get him a fight.

"All Kirk wants is a final chance to pursue his dreams. After working so hard to come back from the injury suffered in the Mora fight, he deserves at least that," said Hornewer.

In 2002, Duva outbid dozens of promoters when he signed Johnson to his company for $1 million dollars.
