British star Amir Khan (30-3, 19KOs) said that he hasn’t gotten any assurances from Floyd Mayweather’s camp that if he gets past former WBO junior welterweight champion Chris Algieri later tonight in their bout at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, he will be the next opponent to face Mayweather in the fall.
But Khan has made it clear he doesn’t want any contact with Mayweather’s people until he gets past Algieri, who returns for the first time since last November's twelve round decision loss to then WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao.
Khan-Algieri headlines the next edition of Premier Boxing Champions on Spike TV.
“Nothing, like I said, I don’t want to speak to Floyd’s team,” Khan said. “I respect my own team, who is also Al Haymon and who also looks after Floyd. They have the respect to me to not bring up Floyd’s name and not to mention any of the names but Algieri. It’s been that serious. I’ve not spoken to anyone from Floyd’s team or heard anything from Pacquiao’s team. Nothing. My focus is just for this fight.”
“I don’t want to look past this fight. I’ve made that mistake before,” Khan went on. “But I’m not looking past this fight. Everywhere I go people are asking me about Mayweather or Pacquiao. The guy I’m fighting and the techniques I’m working on are to beat Chris Algieri, not Mayeather or Pacquiao. There’s no past looking past this fight because that fight might never happen. I’m not looking past this fight. It’s against Chris Algieri so those are the only questions I’m taking bro.”
