WBA light-welterweight Amir Khan could soon be sharing a ring with mandatory challenger Marcos Maidana, although they may not both occupy that ring at the same time. Golden Boy Promotions have negotiated a two-week extension to their WBA-mandated talks with Maidana’s team, with Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer claiming that this fight needs to be built up.
“A situation where they are on the same card would make sense,” said Schaefer when talking to The Daily Star. “Let’s build up the fight. We want to explore what other fights are out there. It’s too early to say what is going to happen. But one thing for sure is that Khan must make his mandatory defence against Maidana.”
Boxing fans are crying out for Khan-Maidana as both men have a lot to prove and would be a perfect match for one another at this stage in their respective careers. Many a fight has been spoiled due to the promoters wanting to build it up; this one looks good to go so it would make sense to push on with it whilst both men are in peak form.
