Amir Khan expects to have more fans come out to support him at tonight at the Barclays Center than the hometown kid Chris Algieri when they face off in the Spike TV headliner to Premier Boxing Champions.
Khan’s wife is originally from Staten Island and Khan is one of the sport’s more popular fighters, no matter where he fights. Algieri is from Huntington, LI but that didn't stop Khan from claiming he'll be the more popular fighter in Brooklyn on Friday.
Khan is back in his first ring appearance since his December twelve round unanimous decision win over Devon Alexander. Algieri will attempt to return to form after suffering a bruising beating in his November decision loss to Manny Pacquiao.
“I really believe that in New York I’ll have more fans,” Khan said. “I’ve been to New York a lot of times. My wife is from here so it’s like a second home for me and when I used to walk around the streets and go to fights over here, I used to always get asked the same question, ‘When are you going to fight in Brooklyn? When are you going to be back in New York so we can see you?' I really believe that I’ll have more fans than Chris even though he’s from New York.”
