Kevin Cunningham is used to maintaining a busy schedule but for now is doing what most of the United States is doing and that is staying home as much as possible as the world battles the Covid-19 coronavirus.
Most recently Cunningham was training Marcos Escudero (10-1) for his March 28th rematch against Joseph George. The Showtime televised tripleheader was to be headlined by the super bantamweight debut of Luis Nery against Aaron Alameda from the Park MGM in Las Vegas, NV. The fight card, like most of sports' world since mid-March, has been postponed indefinitely.
Due to the contagious nature of the virus, shutting down all gyms was the prudent thing to do.
"Camp Cunningham Gym has been closed for about 3 weeks due to covid-19. Cases of coronavirus have multiplied by the day here in South Florida. It's tough staying away from the fighters and gym but social distancing is the safe thing to do right now," Cunningham told BoxingScene.com.
No one knows for certain when boxing or any other sport will resume but Cunningham has stayed in contact with his stable of fighters who continue to train on their own.
"The guys are running on their own and working out at home. Florida is under stay home orders through April 30th," Cunningham stated.
Cunningham's stable of fighters also includes super welterweight contender Erickson Lubin, light heavyweight contender Andre Dirrell, and several others.
