If WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (36-1, 32 KOs) happens to get past Sergio Martinez on Saturday at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, he will try to get Paul Williams (38-1, 27 KOs) in the ring. Pavlik and Williams were set to fight twice last year. Both of the fights were canceled when Pavlik was unable to go forward due to a staph infection.
In order to get Williams, the first thing Pavlik has to do is beat Martinez. Last December at Boardwalk Hall, Williams won a close majority decision over Martinez. Some believed Martinez won the fight. Pavlik was one of those people. He had Martinez winning by one or two rounds, but he still tried to get Williams. The issue of money has gotten in the way. Williams' side are demanding a 50-50 deal.
“After my last fight, I called him out three or four times in the ring. Once again, it was a money issue. … So there wasn’t much we could really do with that. That fight’s definitely still out there. I’m not going to go, ‘Oh, well, because of his camp, what they said’ … a fight’s a fight. So we’ll take care of business first with Martinez and then we’ll go on and see what happens," Pavlik told BoxingScene.com's Keith Idec.
