Hard hitting prospect Walter Kautondokwa (15-0, 14 KO’s) successfully defended his WBO Africa title by a fourth round technical knockout on Friday late evening in Ghana. The card was delayed for almost four hours due to heavy rainfalls at the opened Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.
Kautondokwa’s opponent was experienced Ghanaian Obadai Sai (32-3, 24 KO’s). The participants are by far the highest rated 160-pounders in Africa thus their rivalry was highly celebrated in the continent.
After a couple of feel-out rounds early on, the undefeated Kautondokwa increased his pressure with stiff combinations to the body. In round five, the Namibian landed a big left hook on Sai who hit the canvas and was unable to recover.
“This fight meant a lot to me. Sai and the entire Ghanaian fans predicted that he was going to win but I want to thank the Lord for being with me and thank all the Namibian fans in Ghana that came out to support us. It was an incredible victory and the future looks bright,” said a happy Kautondokwa following his victory.
“I always boasted about this boy’s power and warned the world that his punching power is special. [He simply had] too much power and what a victory for him and his career. We are hopeful that this win will elevate him in the world ratings and open bigger doors and opportunities for him,” discussed Walter’s promoter/manager Nestor Tobias, founder of the MTC Nestor Sunshine Promotions.
With the win, WBO #10 ranked Kautondokwa also added the IBF Africa title to his belt collection. Walter is now in position to get chosen for the targeted September return of WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders, whose mandatory bout has fallen through after the unexpected incarceration of interim titlist Avtandil Khurtsidze.
Friday’s event at the capital of Ghana was promoted by football legend Asamoah Gyan’s BabyJet Promotions alongside with Lions Promotions.
