Middleweight prospect Walter Kautondokwa successfully defended his WBO Africa belt this past Saturday night at the Windhoek Country Club Resort in Windhoek, Namibia. The hard-hitting Kautondokwa (16-0, 15 KOs) faced Tanzanian Meshack Mwankemwa (17-4-2, 10 KOs) in a scheduled 12-round matchup to discuss who will lead the African continent in the 160-pound division.
The 32-year-old undefeated titleholder, who is ranked No. 6 by the WBO, landed a vicious left hook to the jaw of Mwankemwa who fell off his feet and got counted out straight away.
Kautondokwa has been on the run for a while to secure a top opponent at middleweight to prove his power is more than enough to become a world champion.
“I am very satisfied with my performance. Mwankemwa is a good boxer and I was expecting the fight to go the distance but unfortunately, my power once again got the better of me and we all had to call it a night after round three. I would love to fight anybody in the WBO top 15 and hopefully get a shot to the WBO title soon,” said a happy and pumped Kautondokwa to BoxingScene.com after the fight.
On the chief support of the main event unbeaten welterweight, Mikka Shonena (11-0, 1 KO) won a twelve round decision over Ugandian Juma Waisma (10-1-1, 4 KOs) in a tough bout. With the win, Shonena also claimed the vacant WBO Africa title at 147 pounds.
Nestor Tobias, head of the MTC Sunshine Promotions, praised Kautondokwa’s performance and believes his undefeated fighter will make his mark in the 160-pound division.
“We are most likely to see a new force in the middleweight division. Kautondokwa is the future, and I dare Billy Joe Saunders or any other middleweight who thinks he is a force to be reckoned with to challenge this boy to feel his power.”
