According to Kathy Duva, the head of Main Events, Sergey Kovalev, who's coming off a decisive victory over Bernard Hopkins on November 8th, will be making his return in the spring of 2015.
"(Sergey's) going to fight in March and we're working on who it's going to be and obviously we're working with the IBF to work out what it's going to be,"Duva confirmed to BoxingScene.com on Monday afternoon.
Kovalev, in defeating Hopkins picked up the IBF and WBA (super) titles to his collection. Coming into the fight with Hopkins he only held the WBO strap. As part of this agreement to face Hopkins, he was obligated to face the IBF mandatory, Nadjib Mohammedi, in his next bout.
Regardless, his next outing will be televised on HBO which has made a heavy commitment to 'the Krusher' since the summer of 2013, having televised his last five bouts.
As for the rest of the Main Events schedule, no longer having their exclusive deal with NBC Sports Network has put them in an uncertain position. It's not clear just how many shows they will stage in the upcoming year.
"It's hard to say right now because I'm talking with some people. At this point we know HBO's committed to at least two shows with Sergey. I've got a show with ESPN in January that I think they're going to be very happy with and I expect there will be some more, so we'll cobble it together little by little," explained Duva.
Asked if there were other entities besides the usual suspects that were interested in showcasing their clients, Duva answered:
"There are people we've spoken to - now, whether they're going to do it or not, I don't know - but at least they're talking and there's a lot of people putting shows on CBS Sports Network and they're coming to us saying 'hey, can we put your fighters on?' Of course! We'll find ways, I'm not worried."
