On September 6th, former WBO bantaweight champion Tomoki "El Mexicanito" Kameda (31-1) will attempt to regain his title when he faces Jamie McDonell (26-2-1) in an immediate rematch of their May clash that McDonnell won via razor thin decision. The scores were 114-113 on all three scorecards and McDonnell rallied in the second half of the fight after hitting the deck in the third round.
The first fight took place in Hidalgo, Texas and Kameda said that he is happy to be fighting again in Texas with the upcoming fight taking place in Corpus Christi.
"The fight was going to be in New York but they ended up changing the location. I like fighting in Texas though. There are a lot of Mexicans in Texas and I love Mexico," said Kameda who has lived in Mexico for several years and speaks fluent Spanish, the language this interview was conducted in.
Tomoki, who is the youngest of three professional boxing brother's, refuses to look too far ahead even though many people thought he did enough to win the first fight. He said that he expects McDonnell to also makes adjustments but believes his skill level will be too much for the Brit this time around.
"We are focused on this fight. I need to win this fight and then we can talk to the promoters and my trainer and see where we go from here," said Kameda.
"I think they may change it up a little bit but I don't think think it will matter. I think I will be too much for him."
The former bantamweight titlist fought twice in 2014 and is hoping to have a busier 2015. His focus remains on McDonnell but revealed that he hopes to get back in the ring once more before the year is over.
This will mark Kameda's fourth in fight in a row in the United States but he has traveled the globe, also having fought in Mexico, Japan and the Philippines during his career.
"First we have to win this fight and see how it goes but I would like to fight again before the year is over. I want to stay active," Kameda told BoxingScene.com.
