WBA super flyweight world champion Kal Yafai (24-0, 15 KOs) is hoping to secure a big fight in the near future - and he still has his eyes set on former four division world champion Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez (46-2, 38 KOs).

Gonzalez has been out of the ring since suffering back to back defeats at the hands of WBC super flyweight champion Srisikat Sor Rungvisai.

Gonzalez will return to the ring on September 15th, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. He will faces former champion Moises Fuentes as part of the HBO PPV undercard to the Gennady Golovkin vs. Canelo Alvarez rematch.

A contest between Gonzalez and Yafai was mentioned for earlier this year, but the handlers for the Nicaraguan boxer felt it was way too soon for a fight like that.

“He’s coming back in September, I know I’m not in their plans right now. They want to get a couple of wins and then they’re happy to fight me. Hopefully he can get some good wins and then we can have a showdown, which would be great,” Yafai told Boxing News.

Yafai is preparing to return to America for his next fight later this year, in October or November.

He made his American debut back in May, with a stoppage win over David Carmona on ESPN+ His next fight is likely going to happen on DAZN - the new streaming service which holds a multi-year deal with Yafai's promoter, Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport.

“I’m not in bad shape, my speed and timing and my movement’s still pretty good. I’ve had a couple of little spars and I’m better than where I’m normally at at this stage. I’m ticking over and I’ve been working on a few things and just trying to improve each time,” he said.
