Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (49-2-1, 32KOs) says the surgery on his left hand was a success. Chavez will likely remain on the shelf until 2016, as he can't hit anything with his left hand for three months.
Chavez Jr. was in action on July 18 in El Paso, Texas, against fellow Mexican Marco Antonio 'Dorado' Reyes, winning by decision after 10 rounds. He fractured his left hand during the third and fought through until the end.
He hopes to return in December, but says his next fight may not happen until January of next year. He had previously been planning to fight in October or November.
"They put some screws in the knuckle. According to the doctor I will have them for at least one month and then they are going to remove them, and then I can start rehabilitation, which will take me another month," Chavez Jr. told ESPN Deportes. "The surgery went well, the surgeon told me it was a bit complicated because of the way the knuckle ball was connected to the finger, but ultimately it was successful. It lasted just over an hour."
