On September 22nd, super welterweight contender Julian Williams improved to 21-0-1 with a first round knockout of the normally durable Luciano Cuello. Williams hurt the Argentine early and didn't let up, forcing the referee to stop the fight.
"I think it was a good performance. It was only 90 seconds so I wasn't able to see what type of shape he was is in or anything else. I feel I shocked him real early. I was able to hit him with a few shots and get him out of there," Williams explained.
After the fight Williams and former super welterweight champion Austin Trout, who was part of the announcing team, exchanged pleasantries. The two had battled each other over social media in the past but their comments on this day were mostly cordial.
The 25-year-old Williams is just now entering his prime and seems to be on the cusp of landing a big fight. When asked about his conversation with Trout, Williams said that he definitely has respect for the former champ but wants Trout to understand where he is coming from as well.
"I definitely respect him as a fighter. He has fought the best guys in the division. Of course I respect him as a boxer and as a man but he has to respect me as well. I try to tell these guys that they need to get off their high horse and make the fights happen because the fans want to see them. I want to see them for myself and for the fans.
"All this - he don't deserve the fight - he isn't a superstar. If I call out Canelo and he says, 'I don't deserve that', I can eat that because Canelo is a superstar. If I called Cotto out and he said, 'I don't deserve it', I can eat they because Cotto is a superstar. Austin Trout is just a fighter. He's not a champion and not a superstar. See where I am going?" Williams told BoxingScene.com.
