Blue chip junior middleweight prospect Julian "J Rock" Williams (16-0-1) feels that he is ready to make the transition to becoming a contender for a world title. The Philadelphia native has fought twice so far in 2014, winning both fights by stoppage. In March he stopped Freddy Hernandez in three rounds and in May he finished Michael Medina in eight.
The ambitious Williams may only have 17 professional fights but he has already faced many solid veterans and feels that the time is right to step up his level of competition. He said that he would love to face former world champion Austin Trout or Alfredo Angulo in his next fight even though he doesn't believe a fight against either is likely.
There were rumors that Trout would be facing Daniel Dawson of Australia in August but that fight appears to be on the back burner which was music to Williams ears.
"I don't think anyone really wants to see that fight. I would like that fight though. I think that would be a good fight. I would love to fight Trout right now but I don't really think it is going to happen," said Williams before answering my question on a potential matchup with Angulo.
"He is another guy that I would like to fight. He is established, you know? If the money makes sense then why not? Those are the types of guys I want to fight now. I would fight the young guys too but I feel that right now I need to fight some of these established guys."
The 24-year-old Williams finished our conversation by saying that he doesn't have a solid date for his ring return but hopes to come back before the summer is over.
"Hopefully I can fight again in August or September. I just continue to work on my craft and work to improve. I want to thank the fans. They can follow me @jrockboxing," Williams told BoxingScene.com.
