Undefeated junior middleweight prospect Julian "J Rock" Williams (16-0) added another victory to his resume with a stoppage victory over rugged Michael Medina (26-5) this past Saturday in Montreal, Canada. Williams dominated from the opening bell and put on one of the most complete performances of his young career.
The 24-year-old Philadelphia native said that after reviewing the fight, he was pleased with his performance.
"I don't actually rate my performances until I see them. I was actually impressed when I saw it. I saw some things I could have done different but thought overall I did pretty good and I got the result I wanted," Williams explained.
I mentioned that while for the most part he brought the fight to Medina, he didn't seem to get wild or over aggressive and that he paced himself well. He said that was all by design and referenced his fight against Joachim Alcine where he started fast but struggled to get to the finish line.
"For sure (I didn't get over aggressive). I learn from each and every one of my fights. I remember with Alcine I went in and I shot my load. I never wanted to do that again. I looked young and inexperienced. After the fight I watched it a million times and I was upset with myself. I vowed that I would never do that again and that I would stay calm and composed and pick my shots, be a professional," said Williams.
Medina took a lot of punishment but showed a lot of heart in lasting 8 rounds. Williams was also in awe of the pounding that Medina absorbed but said that he knew all along that he would be in tremendous shape and come in with renewed confidence under the guidance of his new trainer Abel Sanchez.
"Oh my gosh, he was extremely tough. I knew he was going to be tough because - I'm not going to say it was his last shot - but he trained like it was his last shot. He had a new camp up in Big Bear and he had a new coach. I knew that he would be tough to take out but it worked out for me and made for an exciting fight for the fans," Williams told Boxingscene.com.
Williams hopes for a quick ring return this summer and said that he is already doing conditioning work.
"I hope to be back in August or September. I don't want to be out too long. I just ran 3 miles yesterday," Williams stated.
