BoxingScene.com speaks to one of the newest editions to the featherweight division, Juan Manuel Lopez. Juanma talks about how he feels more comfortable at featherweight and the keys for him to snatch Steven Luevano's WBO belt. Puerto Rico's next great superstar talks about what went wrong against Rogers Mtagwa, a potential fight down the road against Yuriorkis Gamboa and how Celestino Caballero overvalued himself in this exclusive interview. Lopez takes on Luevano on January 23rd on HBO in New York.

BoxingScene.com: How is training going for Steven Luevano?

Juan Manuel Lopez: It is going great. We are about at 85% of where we need to get to. We have two and a half more weeks to get our weight to where we need it and we are right on track to hit it so everything is going great.

BoxingScene.com: What are the keys to the fight?

Juan Manuel Lopez: Luevano is a great boxer who moves around a lot. We need to pressure him every round and make him feel our presence. We can't let him get comfortable. I have strong hands and I am going to make sure he feels them. He has a good defense but I have fast, strong hands and with my power there is a chance we knock him out but we are going to pressure him like I say from the first round to the last round and and try to win every point if it goes the distance. He has a good chin and can take a lot of punches but we will see if he can take mine.

BoxingScene.com: Like you say Luevano is known for his defense. How do you plan on penetrating it?

Juan Manuel Lopez: Yes he is known for that. He is a technically sound fighter. We don't really have to change much of what I do. He likes to throw a right and then he has a way that he likes to smother afterwards so that the other fighter can't get his punches off. He clinches and moves well but we will be prepared for it.

BoxingScene.com: You seemed to really struggle to make 122 lbs. Do you think you will come into this fight with more stamina with the extra four pounds?

Juan Manuel Lopez: Oh yes this a lot better at 126. The decision to leave 122 lbs. was the best thing for me. I feel a lot stronger. I was weak and really drained getting down to 122 lbs. I feel like a lot stronger now. Today I left the gym and I am seven pounds away from being at the limit and I feel great.

BoxingScene.com: What did you learn from your tough fight with Rogers Mtagwa?

Juan Manuel Lopez: That was a very tough fight. It was very complicated. One thing I learned is I have to be more patient. I need to take my time. He was a tough guy and it was a good experience for me to learn from. I got hit with a lot of shots I should have blocked but I wasn't patient. I should have remained calm and fought my fight.

BoxingScene.com: Mtagwa is a very awkward fighter with an iron chin. In Luevano you have a completely different fighter. Do you think you match up better with Luevano?

Juan Manuel Lopez: Yes they are very different fighters. Luevano is a more technically sound fighter. A clean fighter. He fights more definite and controlled. He is a more organized fighter and I think that he isn't easier but he is less complicated.

BoxingScene.com: Mexican and Puerto Rican fighters have had a great rivalry throughout the years. Luevano is Mexican American in this case but how do you feel about the rivalry personally?

Juan Manuel Lopez: To me both countries have great fighters. To me it is just sports and nothing personal. I have a lot of Mexican friends and I think that both cultures are very similar and both countries love boxing and that has a lot to do with it. In Mexico they have their style and they have had a lot of champions and won a lot of fights and here we have had our great fighters as well. We (Mexicans and Puerto Ricans) are about the same size and same weight so we end up fighting each other a lot. But Luevano is a Mexican American who grew up in the United States so I think its different. He still is Mexican but its not the same as me fighting someone from Mexico. It is different than when I fought Ponce De Leon, Cuautemoc Vargas, Hugo Dianzo, Cesar Figueroa and some of those guys from Mexico.

BoxingScene.com: How does it feel to be headlining at Madison Square Garden again, this time on HBO?

Juan Manuel Lopez: This will be my second time headlining in New York so I am very excited about it. It is something I always dreamed of doing when I was younger. I am happy that I have the opportunity and am working hard to put on a great show and please the fans.

BoxingScene.com: Is the plan still for you and Yuriorkis Gamboa to fight the night before the Puerto Rican parade in New York assuming you both win your fights on January 23rd?

Juan Manuel Lopez: I have heard that and would love it but you know in boxing things change all the time. I have heard that Miguel Cotto is going to fight on that day again so who really knows. He usually fights on that day. I am sure I will be fighting Gamboa soon though. It might be in June or at the end of the year or in 2011 but I believe it will happen. You never know where the road leads but I am confident that fight will happen.

BoxingScene.com: What is the real story on what happened with you anticipated fight with Celestino Caballero? That was a fight a lot of fans wanted to see.

Juan Manuel Lopez: Celestino Caballero talked a lot and said he wanted the fight and that it didn't matter how much money he was going to make and that we just had to agree to the fight and he would take it. He even said he would fight for free to fight me. He said all that but he didn't back up his words. It was all lies. First off he thought he was worth more than he is worth and there wasn't enough money for the fight. He had his chance so now he has to wait in line. He went back on his word from his original statement and now I left that division. We agreed to fight him and then he thought he was worth more than he is so he is the one who killed the fight.

BoxingScene.com: So if he wants to fight you he has to move up to 126?

Juan Manuel Lopez: Yes I am at 126 now. He also needs to show that he is a top fighter in the division. I want to fight Gamboa and also Chris John is a great fighter. At this point I only want to fight the best fighters. Caballero has to demonstrate that he is at the same level as me. Not only does he have to demonstrate it to me but he has to demonstrate it to the public and especially to HBO that he is worth showing on their network. If he does that then yes I will fight him. The only people interested in that fight right now are the people of Puerto Rico. If he can show he is worth being on TV then sure I will fight him.

BoxingScene.com: Last question. Do you have a message for the fans?

Juan Manuel Lopez: Yes I do. I want to thank all the fans for their support. I really appreciate it. Please tune in on January 23rd. It will be a great show. I want to put on a great show and please all the fans. Thanks again.
