There certainly isn't any love lost between former champions and long time rivals Juan Manuel Lopez (34-5) and Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (24-6).
The two Puerto Ricans have hurled insults back and forth at each other for years and on October 8th, they will settle their differences in the ring at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan. Black Tiger Promotions will promote the fight that is expected to be available in the U.S. mainland on pay-per-view.
Earlier this month a press conference was announced to promote the show and both fighters continued their verbal assaults on each other. Vazquez ended up taking his shirt off and told Lopez that they could fight right then and there.
The 33-year-old Lopez wasn't surprised at the way Lopez behaved and said that he was showing his true colors.
"He is a clown - a clown who is not professional. To me that isn't the way to conduct yourself in this sport. If that is the type of person he is - well then everybody saw it," said Lopez.
Juanma will have been out of the ring just over 2 years when they face each other. In order to make the fight a reality, a catchweight and rehydration clause were agreed upon. Lopez began his career at 122 pounds and has fought as high as 130 while Vazquez started his career at 122 pounds and currently campaigns as a featherweight.
"It is a catchweight at 129. The next day at 11 am we weigh in again with a limit of 136 pounds. I have to be 136 at 11 in the morning but when we fight at 10 pm at night it will be fine. I will only go up 10-12 pounds (in total) for the fight which is normal," Lopez told BoxingScene.com.
