The stage may be set. Juan Manuel Marquez's eleven-round knockout of Joel Casamayor on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas has set up another potential mega-bout. The word coming out of Golden Boy Promotions is that Juan "Baby Bull" Diaz (34-1, 17KOs) is the next fighter they would like to match with Marquez (49-4-1, 36KOs). Diaz's manager, Willie Savannah, told BoxingScene.com a few days ago that Golden Boy, who promote both fighters, mentioned the possibility of a fight with Marquez. Savannah is very high on Diaz meeting Marquez.
"Golden Boy did mention that the other night. We would love to fight Juan Manuel Marquez. If they did it in Houston, that fight would be big with all of the Mexican fans," Savannah said.
Savannah was also interested in matching Diaz with Joan Guzman, if he wuld have beaten WBA/WBO/IBF lightweight champion Nate Campbell. Guzman never made weight for the Campbell fight and pulled out a few hours before the fight was scheduled to take place. He now faces a possible one-year suspension, eliminating him as a possibility and leaving the path open for the Marquez-Diaz fight to move forward.
