The summer return for former four division world champion Juan Manuel "Dinamita" Marquez (56-7-1, 40KOs) is starting to come together.
Marquez has emphasized that he wants a fight before a potential fall showdown with another former four division champion, Miguel Cotto.
According to Ciro Nucci, president of the Boxing Commission of Mexico City, there is a great demand to have Marquez fight in Zocalo, which is the common name of the main square in central Mexico City. Depending on the weather, the fight would take place on a date in June or July.
All of the political figures in Mexico City are on board to make the event happen. They are waiting for Marquez to make up his mind.
"The mayor [of Mexico City] wants Marquez to fight in the Zocalo . If everything is goes well, then you will see it in June or July. Juan Manuel wants a big pre-fight before facing Cotto," said Nucci to Carlos Zulbaran.
"The officials [of Mexico City] have said that they are open to everything [in staging this event]; the final word [on the event taking place] is sitting with the champion Juan Manuel Marquez. The fight with Cotto could take place in September or November, but Marquez wants to make a fight before that."
Cotto (40-5, 33KOs) would be the final fight of Marquez's career, if it actually takes place.
Marquez, 42-years-old, has been out of the ring since winning a twelve round unanimous decision over former WBO junior welterweight champion Mike Alvarado at the Forum in Los Angeles. Since then Marquez has been dealing with a knee injury and rehabilitation to properly recover.
Cotto was last in the ring in November when he lost a twelve round unanimous decision to Saul 'Caenlo' Alvarez.
