After wrapping up a whirlwind of a media tour to promote May's mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Shane Mosley, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer was back in the office on Friday working on several upcoming shows. Schaefer spoke with BoxingScene.com about the planned return of WBO/WBA lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez.

Marquez is likely to return in the summer, at 135-pounds. Last September, he moved up by two weight divisions to challenge the comebacking Floyd Mayweather Jr. Marquez was simply too small for the weight. He dropped a lopsided twelve round decision. Even with the loss, Marquez managed to pick up some bragging rights in the aftermath. The pay-per-view with Mayweather generated over a million buys - which is something his Mexican counterparts like Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales were never able to achieve.

There had been speculation that Marquez might challenge one of the champions at 140-pounds, but he appears to heading in the direction of a lightweight title defense. Marquez will sit down with Schaefer next week to map out his next fight.

"Juan Manuel Marquez will be back at lightweight to defend his WBA and WBO titles. It will probably be in the summer and on HBO," Schaefer told BoxingScene.com.

Michael Katsidis, the WBO's interim champion, has been gunning for a crack at Marquez. He defends that interim status against undefeated Kevin Mitchell on May 8 in England. Marquez will not wait for the winner of that fight, although the winner could become an option in the near future.

A rematch with Juan Diaz, who Marquez knocked out in 2009, is an option. Diaz's manager Willie Savannah told BoxingScene there have been discussions about a possible rematch. Marquez-Diaz was selected as 2009's Fight of The Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America.
