WBO super bantamweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez (24-0, 22KOs) won "Boxer of The Year" honors at the annual gala put together by the commission that oversees boxing in Puerto Rico. Lopez won four fights in 2008, won a major title, won all four of those bouts by knockout and all four wins were achieved in three rounds or less.

"There are many great champions in Puerto Rico and to have them choose me is a great honor. I did not think that I would find this kind of success so quickly, although my team thought I would. But this would not be possible if wasn't for my great team. I thank them and because of them and my work - we have arrived to this position," Lopez said to Primera Hora .

Lopez returns on April 25 in Puerto Rico, defending the title against WBO bantamweight champ Gerry Penalosa. The fight will be televised by HBO.
