Latin Sports, the leading Hispanic Sports Promotions and Management Company in the US, is pleased to present some Q and A with Juan Francisco “El Gallo” Estrada (36-2, 25 KOs), who scored a unanimous victory over fellow countryman Carlos “El Principe” Cuadras (36-2-1, 27 KOs) in a WBC Super Flyweight title eliminator on Saturday, September 9th at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.
Q. Juan, how are you feeling now that you have had time to reflect on your impressive victory against Carlos Cuadras?
A. I feel great! I was looking forward to this opportunity for many years. Cuadras is a great champion and we had a fierce battle, typical of two Mexican warriors. I want to thank HBO and Latin Sports for making it happen and I look forward to returning in Superfly 2 this February for my next title shot vs Sor Rungvisai.
Q. Were you ever hurt by Cuadras?
A. Not really. I respect Cuadras as he is a top level fighter and a tremendous champion, but he never hurt me in the fight. He hit me with some good shots as he moves around a lot and has good hand speed. As the fight progressed I felt more and more in control of the match.
Q. What did you think when Michael Buffer made the error with your name?
A. At first I was shocked as I felt that I clearly won the fight, especially after the knockdown in the 10th round. Luckily I did not have to suffer too long before they corrected the announcement. That was certainly a relief!
Q. Were you Happy to know the crowd was on your side?
A. They were almost as happy as me when the correct decision was announced. My sincere thanks to the crowd at the StubHub Center for being in my corner. I think the LA fight fans recognize my consistent work ethic in the ring and they are also very knowledgeable about the sport.
Q. What are your thoughts on Sor Rungvisai now that date is set for Feb 24 in LA?
A. It is kind of strange that I have been waiting for years for a rematch with Chocolatito and when I won my fight against Cuadras, I thought I would fight Chocolatito again. But that’s boxing. You can’t take anything, or anyone, for granted.
I am very excited about facing Sor Rungvisai for the WBC World Super Flyweight Title on February 24th in Los Angeles. He will be a difficult challenge as he defeated Chocolatito twice in a row with a vicious KO in their last fight. Rungvisai is a very tough and skilled boxer so I will have to prepare very well to be ready to challenge him for his belt.
Q. Comments about Chocolatito wanting Rungvisai i#3?
A. I can understand that as a competitor and a champion that Chocolatito wants another opportunity to redeem himself against Rungvisai but at this point it is premature to have that discussion.
