Jose Maria Delgado cannot catch a break in the United States.
Having fought to a draw in each of his three previous bouts on this side of the U.S.-Mexico border, Los Angeles’ Delgado was forced to settle for the same outcome against a determined Armando Frausto in a six-round majority draw. Scores were 58-56 in favor of Delgado and 57-57 twice in their Fite Pay-Per-View preliminary bout Friday evening at Galveston Island Convention Center in Galveston, Texas.
Both fighters had each other hurt on several occasions during their high-contact affair. Degaldo looked to establish range early in the contest, only for Frausto to immediately work his way inside and force a dogfight every step of the way.
Delgado was game for the cause, outworking the La Marque, Texas slugger during most exchanges and offering angles which often proved a difficult target. Frausto (8-1-1, 5KOs) was at his best when action was at center ring and at close quarters, though just not able to enjoy those moments long enough to force the upset.
The upsetting outcome leaves Delgado at 6-0-4 (20KOs). The 25-year old prospect is 6-0 in Mexico and 0-0-4 in the U.S.
Alexis Chavarria needed three tries to finally make his way from the dressing room to the ring. Juan Antonio Velazquez only needed two rounds to send him backstage.
In an aggressive battle of unbeaten Houston-based junior lightweights, Velazquez overwhelmed Chavarria en route to a 2nd round stoppage. No knockdowns were scored, but a barrage of punches by Velazquez left Chavarria unable to defend himself in forcing the stoppage at 2:14 of round two.
Chavarria’s delayed ring entrance proved well worth the wait, coming complete with a wolf mask to the delight of the socially-distanced crowd on hand. Once the bell sounded, it was Velazquez who went into animal mode, repeatedly rocking Chavarria (1-1, 0KOs) who just kept nodding in approval while doing his best to respond with power shots of his own.
Velazquez closed the show in round two, slamming home power punches until the referee stepped into to stop the fight. Chavarria offered a mild protest, though to no avail as he suffers his first defeat. Velazquez rolls to 6-0 (4KOs) with the win, coming just three weeks after picking up a four-round decision victory in Houston.
