“The offer’s on the table.”
That was the message from Leeds favourite Josh Warrington (25-0, 5 KOs) to IBF featherweight champion Lee Selby (25-1, 9 KOs) on Twitter earlier tonight (August 1).
Warrington, the WBC International featherweight belt holder, returns to action on October 21 at the First Direct Arena, Leeds on BT Sport. And the 26-year-old, and his promoter Frank Warren, want Selby to take up the offer presented to him.
Warrington and Selby have long been linked with a fight against one another with Warrington’s former promoter Eddie Hearn having hoped that a fight would have taken place outdoors at Elland Road, the home of Leeds United Football Club, last year.
Frank Warren told Boxing Scene last week that Selby v Warrington is a fight that he is trying to make to main event the October 21 card.
Warrington took to social media today to further emphasise his demand for the fight by tweeting: “Selby got his eyes on Frampton but constantly labels me “easy work”. If you want a warm up Lee, come and fight me. Offer’s on the table…”
Selby’s link to fighting Carl Frampton increased after the events of the weekend past that saw Frampton’s WBC featherweight title eliminator with Andres Gutierrez, and the undercard, fall through when the 24-year-old Mexican fell in the shower sustaining facial damage that forced him to withdraw from the fight. A fight that would only have been an eliminator for only Gutierrez after Frampton failed to make the 126lbs weight limit on the Friday.
Selby has said he is ready and willing to face the former world super-bantamweight champion in October or November. It appears the race is on to see who will face Frampton first. Selby or Warrington?
